Legalization of documents is the process that verifies a document's authenticity and legal validity, so it can be recognized and officially used in a country other than where it was originally issued. When a document is legalized, an apostille stamp is applied.

Apostilles are most often used in connection with applications for admission to foreign educations, foreign lawsuits, and official purposes abroad. Typical documents are diplomas, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, residence certificates, baptism certificates, etc.

It is not only individuals who may need to legalize documents. Legalizations of documents issued by an organization or an authority must also contain an apostille stamp, which verifies the sender.

FAQ

Below we have gathered the most important questions and answers about apostille/legalization.

Does my legalized document need to be translated?

Some authorities require a translated document with an apostille stamp before it can be legalized. The translation must also be performed by a state-authorized translator and have a translator's stamp before it can be used in connection with an application for a work permit or residence permit, for example.

Where can I get an apostille stamp?

You can get an apostille stamp from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but only if the document is in Danish or English. Therefore, if you need legalization in, for example, French or Spanish, it must be issued from other authorities.
